Since the beginning of CASA Partners in 1987, 8,580 My Bags have been distributed to children entering the foster care system in
When a child is removed from his or her home and placed in foster care, the child usually leaves with few, if any, clothes or personal care items. Before My Bag started, what possessions the child had were put in a garbage bag to be taken to the foster-care home. Because of this, many of these children were referred to as “garbage bag kids.” Now each child is given an age and gender appropriate backpack or duffle bag with some clothing and personal care items, as well as a book for pleasure reading, and a handmade blanket and stuffed toy for comfort. The My Bag project restores some sense of dignity to these children when their lives are in turmoil, and they are no longer referred to as “garbage bag kids.”
When it became apparent to Linda that another group of children at risk for entering the foster care system had a need for back-to-school clothes and school supplies, the My School Bag program was initiated. The My School Bags distributed to children this past fall contained new clothing and shoes, personal hygiene items, and school supplies. And, of course, the comforting blanket and stuffed toy, and books for at home reading. Linda and her volunteers spend a great deal of time shopping for each child. Starting the school year with new jeans and shoes, and supplies for classes gives these children the dignity that all children should be afforded.
Thank you to our supporters, cash donors, in-kind gifts and volunteers, for your contribution to the dignity of children.
