Needs from the Heart project to receive $3,000 grant
April 1, 2006

The Needs from the Heart project received a $3,000 June Leonard Memorial Enrichment Fund grant in April 2006.  The grant was given by Treehouse, a Seattle organization founded to improve the lives of foster children living in King County.  State Representatives Ruth Kagi and Mary Lou Dickerson, and Nate Miles, government relations director for Eli Lilly, asked Treehouse to join them in raising awareness and funds for children in foster care throughout Washington State.  The first annual June Leonard Memorial Putting Tournament, named for June Leonard, respected legislator and advocate for children in foster care, took place at the State Capital in January 2006.  Proceeds from that event were distributed throughout the state by Treehouse to other organizations working to benefit children in foster care.  The grant specified that the monies were to be used to “. . . pay for the fees and equipment so children can participate in extra-curricular activities or enjoy milestone experiences.”   Needs from the Heart met that criteria by covering the cost of summer camp; swimming, dance, and therapeutic horse riding lessons; and tickets for the Spokane Interstate Fair for several foster children living in Spokane County.  Casa Partners is honored to be selected by Treehouse for this grant.
